Accessibility Statement
How we are working to make this site usable by everyone, and how to tell us when we fall short.
Last reviewed: August 2026
Our Commitment
The Brookline Fire Protection District is committed to ensuring that its website is accessible to all members of the public, including individuals with disabilities. As a public governmental entity, the District is subject to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The U.S. Department of Justice's rule on the accessibility of web content and mobile applications (28 CFR Part 35, Subpart H) adopts WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard for state and local government websites. As a special district government, the District's compliance date under that rule is April 26, 2028. The District is working to meet that standard ahead of the deadline.
Current Status
The District completed an accessibility review of this website in August 2026. The following have been addressed:
- Navigation now works without JavaScript, so no page becomes unreachable if scripts fail to load
- All pages and submenu items are reachable using only a keyboard
- Page content no longer depends on scripting in order to become visible
- Colour contrast corrected to meet the 4.5:1 minimum for text
- Expandable sections rebuilt using standard buttons that report their state correctly to screen readers
- Heading order corrected so headings descend without skipping levels
- Lists marked up so screen readers announce them as lists
- Layout corrected to avoid horizontal scrolling on small screens
- Motion effects now respect the operating system's "reduce motion" setting, and no animation loops indefinitely
- Text remains readable and nothing is cut off at 200% zoom, or when text spacing is increased
- Links and controls meet the minimum target size, so they are easier to tap accurately
- Drop-down menus opened by hovering can be dismissed with the Escape key
- Alternative text on content images, visible keyboard focus indicators, landmark regions, and a skip navigation link
Work continues in the following areas:
- Replacing placeholder photographs on the Apparatus, Stations, and Leadership pages
- Reducing image file sizes to improve loading on slower connections
- Ongoing review of new content as it is published
We aim to fully conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA and will update this statement as improvements are completed.
